Designation

Nemea (formerly known as Agios Georgios) is a town in the prefecture of Corinthia and is the capital of the municipality of Nemea. It received its name from the Nymph Nemea, daughter of the Asopus river that crosses and water the plain and its vineyards even today. Until 1923, Nemea was called Agios Georgios from the Byzantine church of the same name. This is where the red wine variety Agiorgitiko took its name from.

History

Since ancient times, Nemea produced an excellent wine, known throughout Greece at the time, aw ‘’fliassios wine’’. According to the myth, the ‘’fliassios wine’’ was the blood of Hercules that flowed abundantly and was worshiped with glory in Ancient Nemea. The area has been famous for its wine since ancient times, when it was called Fliasion Pedion. The name Flius was established in the ancient city of the same name by Flias or Flius. In the Byzantine years, Nemea was attacked by Slavs and Bulgarians and conquered by the Latins first and then by the Turks. IN THE Revolution of 1821, many residents took part in the liberation struggle under the leadership of chieftain Danopoulos. Liberation came in 1822 with the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from Nemea. It was liberated in 1822, when the last Turkish army left Nemea.
